Small Town Mississippi Has Shut Down
While packing up this morning we met a couple from Bancroft
Ontario. They had come down to New Orleans
by a different route, The Great River Road.
It follows the Mississippi River from start to finish. They were on their way home and are going to
drive the Natchez Trace Parkway.
Before leaving the Natchez area, we visited the Emerald
Mound Site. It was built by the ancestors
of the Natchez Indians between 1250 and 1600 A.D. It covers 8 acres and is over 35 feet
high. The mound on top of that is
another 30 feet high. The natives used
it for ceremonial purposes. We cannot
imagine how they built it.
We then headed south through the rest of Mississippi on a
quiet rural road. Back in New York State
and in Pennsylvania, it was fun to drive through small town America. Today small-town America was shut down. We traveled through some really rough
areas. Virtually every business was
boarded up and the houses run down. Way
too many people were living in run down trailers. It appears that Southern Mississippi has been
left out of ‘Trump’s wonderful economic success’ that he is so fond of bragging
about.
We are in a KOA Kampground in the edge of Baton Rouge Louisiana. It is hot!!!
It is presently 37 degrees. We
are sitting under a picnic shelter where great big fans are moving the hot air
around…sort of.
Distance Traveled = 195 km.
Wildlife Sightings = Blue Jay, Cowbird, Canada Geese, Cardinal, Brown
Thrasher, Turkey Vulture, Black Vulture.
